Part One
The growing feeling of being watched was not one you were accustomed to in everyday life but the moment the doors to the Great Hall were swung wide; the sensation of a hundred eyes hit you like the hooves of a Hippogriff. Wide eyes, bright eyes, dulled eyes – they were all on you as you walked briskly behind Professor McGonagall with your head downwards cast towards what appeared to be a dusty looking hat near the head table.
Brilliant colours revealed themselves to you the moment you lifted your eyes. Rich reds and uplifting oranges. The sight of the banners made you turn a shade of white. Of course, you knew what they meant, having waited nearly your entire life to go to Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry. After all, it was simply a matter of inconvenience which drove you to Ilvermorny in the first place.  You could hardly wait to find out what house you would be in, having been in Thunderbird at your previous school. The possibilities of who you could be found to fit in were almost unparalleled, no one house had an equal at either school.
Small titters caught your attention from all around you and you could sense a few of the first years from behind you flinching with fright. It was this which brought you to your senses and convinced you to hold your head a little higher as you calmly met the gaze of anyone who looked your way. After reaching the front of the hall, the professor moved to stand beside the great hat and you watched in glee as it jumped into action and performed a song, telling about the four different houses there were to be sorted in.
“Now!” Called Professor McGonagall, rather briskly, once the hat had finished. “It is time for the sorting of new students who will be joining us this year, beginning with Miss Y/N Y/L/N; a new transfer from Ilvermorny school.”
All your previous pretence of courage left you in a short and quick burst as the full attention of everybody present was directed onto your shivering frame. With great struggle, you relaxed your muscles and walked towards Professor McGonagall as calmly as you were able.
Sitting on the dusty stool meant for children years younger than you was somewhat a nerve-wracking process for you waited with the fear and daydream of it collapsing beneath your weight in front of everyone.
After what felt like an age, Professor McGonagall walked towards you with the hat in hand and placed it on your head with a small, almost soundless thump. The material faltered for a moment and you bit your bottom lip as it began to slide a little down your forehead, thankfully stopping before it covered your eyes.
A raspy voice entered your head and the old sounds of the hat filled your mind. ‘Well then!’ it seemed to cheer and you shivered beneath the knowledge this hat could hear your very thoughts as they came to you. ‘An Ilvermorny transfer, I see…’ it continued, seemingly without picking up on your unease. You wondered how it worked; did the hat have a spell placed upon it which allowed it conscious thoughts? You knew that the hat had come from Gryffindor, who took it off from its own head but how did the four founders achieve such a high level of sophistication? Perhaps-
“Ravenclaw!”
You had barely registered what the loud, booming voice of the hat meant when McGonagall snuck up behind you and plucked the hat from atop you head. “Off you go then, dear.” She said lowly in that no-nonsense tone of hers which commanded you not to question or refuse her.
Stumbling off the stool, you found your feet and careened towards the table which featured violet banners with the symbol of a raven. Sitting down on the bench, you found yourself next to a girl with long, almost silvery hair which glinted in the light. “Hello,” she said as the next, terrified first year had the hat placed on his head.
“Uh, hi.” You mumbled and tried not to laugh at the girl’s earrings, which appeared to be made from radishes.
“Oh, don’t mind Luna.” Another girl said from across the table. “I’m Padma, by the way.”
“Nice to meet you.” You smiled and then smiled again at Luna. “I’m Y/N.”
The rest of the feast appeared and disappeared in a literal blur and before you knew it you were heading off to bed, delighted to find your luggage waiting in the dorm all ready for you. You found that both Luna and Padma were both in your year and that you would be sharing a timetable with them. When you awoke the next morning, it was as if you had found another place you belonged.
Your first lesson after breakfast was care of Magical creatures which you found you would be taking alongside the Gryffindor students. “What sorts of creatures do we get to see?” You asked Padma excitedly as you headed down from Ravenclaw tower and joined the flow of students on the staircases.
“Well,” a voice cut in from behind you and you turned around to find a boy bright red hair staring at you. “That would depend on what Hagrid has cross-bred this year. Ron Weasley, by the way.”
“Y/N Y/L/N.” You replied. “And, isn’t the cross-breeding of species illegal?”
“Oh yes,” another girl chimed in. “Very. Which is why I’m hoping that my letter to him will have had some effect.”
“Hermione!” Ron muttered under his breath.
“Don’t mind them,” another boy murmured from your other side and you found yourself looking up at a boy with black hair and green eyes.
You smiled and went to say something else but all words evaded you as you noticed the zig-zagging, lightning shaped scar which pervaded his head. “Harry Potter?” You questioned, trying to keep your voice as calm as possible.
He seemed a little taken aback as he awkwardly muttered a “Yes?”
“Sorry,” you immediately apologised. “It’s just, my aunt told me before I came to Hogwarts that you would be here. It’s a pleasure to meet you, I’m Y/N.”
He nodded and smiled slightly as a way of dismissing the conversation onto another topic. “You’re in Ravenclaw, aren’t you?”
You nodded this time and laughed. “Transferred from Ilvermorny.” You confirmed.
“Can I ask why?” He asked as you came to the doors of the castle, which began to lead you down to a small looking hut with a smoking chimney.
“You can.” You smirked and carried on walking, enjoying the way his laugh sounded as it bubbled from his throat. He seemed a little embarrassed by your making fun of him but carried on nevertheless.
“Then why?” He laughed.
Your smile faded a little as the memories hit you all at once. “My parents…they died just before the end of last year and my aunt could no longer care for me due to the nature of her work.” You tried to keep the description to a minimum, over time you had learnt that the less you said, the quicker the topic passed so that you would be able to move on. The longer you spent dwelling on past events which could never be changed, the less likely it was that you would be able to sleep that night.
“I’m sorry,” Harry said and you refrained from rolling your eyes. Why did people apologise for the deaths of people they didn’t even know? We are all responsible for each other, yes, but it is not the fault of a stranger half-way across the world that events out of their hands transpired and took lives.
“It’s not as though it’s your fault.” You tried to smile. “Besides,” you continued. “They died doing what they loved, they wouldn’t have had it any other way.”
The conversation drew to a close as you approached a great man who towered over all the students, with long, curly hair. “Alrigh’ you lot?” The man called out, making you jump slightly at the sheer volume of his voice. “’Arry.” He smiled at Harry, who had come to stand next to you as students began filing into a semi-circle.
“Hello, Hagrid.” Harry smiled and gave a little wave.
“Who’s yer frien’ there?” Hagrid asked and it surprised you to see the wide smile which spread across his face. Despite his size, he looked downright jolly.
It took you another moment to realise that by ‘friend’, Hagrid indeed meant you. You blushed and piped up, giving you name in a little, embarrassed sounding murmur.
The lesson went on from there, picking up and you found yourself really enjoying what you were being taught. Hagrid showed you where the unicorns burrowed a little deeper within the forest and you watched, completely transfixed as Harry approached one with his hands raised and expression calm.
Mimicking him, you began to creep forwards and slowly outstretched a hand to the creature’s neck which you carefully brushed with your hand. You laughed as the creature reared back its head and let out a small whine but in the same moment, someone stepped on a twig behind you, making the unicorn jump and falter. It snorted and backed up hastily making it jump back but before you could get too far your back collided with someone’s chest and a hand was being reached in front of you to touch the unicorn’s neck in the exact same place you had been. Almost immediately, it calmed at the touch and stopped jerking around.
“Shh,” Harry murmured, barely noticing you or how close the two of you were as he attempted to calm the creature.
“You know,” you began whilst taking deep breaths in an attempt to calm yourself. “You’re really good at that.”
Harry jumped, as though he was only just realising the true lack of space between you and his cheeks began to flame once he had. “Th-thanks.” He swallowed, taking a step back to allow your pet the unicorn again.
“No problem.” You smiled, nudging your shoulder against his as you stepped towards the creature once again.
